Many elements of Thai massage point to an Indian origin, the actual authorship is attributed to a North Indian doctor from the 5th century BC, who is still revered in Thailand today as the "father of medicine".
Thai peoples, originally from what is now southern China, brought strong influences from Chinese medicine into today’s Thai massage, so that today’s Thai massage cannot be viewed as a rigid doctrine, but has been shaped by a variety of influences over the centuries, including the later increasing trade relations with neighboring countries.
The only written remains are written on palm leaves in Pali and Khmer and were engraved on 60 stone tablets in the Wat Pho temple in Bangkok in 1832 during the reign of the Thai King Rama III. All other evidence was lost in 1767 when the former royal city of Ayutthaya was destroyed.
